New Jersey Law Requires Solar for Distribution Warehouses

new Jersey law

A New Jersey law bill A3352 requiring solar for distribution warehouses was recently singed by Gov. Phil Murphy to take effect immediately. This law stipulates that all new warehouses of 100,000 square feet or larger be “solar-ready” or secure up to 40 percent of roof space for solar arrays. Rooftop solar array’s are pictured above on warehouses next to the Walt Whitman bridge.

New warehouses built on or after July 1, 2022 will be required to be solar-ready. A warehouse is defined in this law as any building that is at least 100,00 square feet and primarily used to store goods for resale.

This law is vital for New Jersey’s environmental efforts. The state has a goal of reaching 17 GW of solar by 2035. New Jersey has a growing abundance of warehouses, with the aggregate area of leased warehouse space in the northern and central parts of the state growing by 11.1 million square feet in the first quarter of 2021, according to commercial real estate advisory firm, Newmark. With this growing abundance of warehouse space now required to be solar-ready people like Scott Elias, senior manager of state affairs for the Mid-Atlantic at the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), are confident that this New Jersey law will help the state make great progress towards its goal.
