What is a Building Automation System?

One of the greatest powers we have nowadays as human beings is the ability to control the environment around us. From fire and shelter to fan and air conditioner, our quality of life keeps increasing. As buildings have become more complex in the late twentieth century, business owners and facility managers are looking for safe and cheap solutions to keep their indoor environment comfortable for people. This is how building automation system (BAS) gradually came into being.

What is Building Automation System?

Building automation systems aim to control the environment inside a building or construction. It is an efficient tool in managing heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) indoor. BAS products control the building similar to how our central nervous system controls our body. A good BAS can not only keep every corner of the building warm and comfortable, but also be safe, relatively cheap and environmentally-friendly.

What is in a BAS?

According to a blog article, the main components of BAS include sensors, controller, output devices, communication protocols and terminal interface.

According to Techmark, sensors can include thermostats, air flow, room units and universal controllers, temperature sensors etc. They keep track of the temperature, humidity, lighting level, CO2 output and air etc. inside the building and send the data back to the centralized controller.

The controller gathers the information from each sensor and “makes a decision” on if there is anything that need to be changed. It operates as the commander of the BAS.

Then, output devices will implement the commands that the controller sends out, whether it is to make changes or to maintain the same commands.

Though not dealing with the building directly, the communication protocol is still a critical feature of BAS. It is the special language that BAS uses to communicate within the system.

Last but not least, the user interface is the bridge between people and BAS. People who use the building will “tell” BAS what they want via the user interface either through a monitor or through a mobile device that has connected to BAS.
